Barktown Rescue Teams Up with Pedigree Foundation and Rosie Dane Dog Training
Training Adoptable Dogs: Barktown Teams Up with Pedigree Foundation and Rosie Dane Boston, Kentucky – December 18, 2024 – Barktown Rescue is excited to announce a new initiative, supported by a grant from Pedigree Foundation, to prepare adoptable dogs for success in their forever homes. The grant supports a 10-week novice training course in collaboration with Rosie Dane Dog Training, a community partner renowned for their expertise in canine training. This comprehensive program focuses on teaching essential novice commands, such as sit, down, stay, recall, and on/off-leash heeling, while also addressing learned behavior manners at home and in public, as well as problem-solving skills. By equipping dogs with these tools, Barktown Rescue is enhancing their adoptability and fostering smoother transitions to their new homes. “Training is the cornerstone of a successful adoption, and this program gives both dogs and their new families the resources to build a strong, lasting bond,” said Heather Nelson, Executive Director of Barktown Rescue. “With Rosie Dane Dog Training’s expertise, we’re confident that this initiative will transform lives—for both our dogs and their adopters.” Key Features of the Training Program •Professional Oversight: The program is led by Rosie Dane Dog Training, whose experience with over 8,000 dogs ensures every participant receives personalized, effective instruction. •Focused Training: Dogs will learn essential commands, home and away manners, and problem-solving to address behavioral challenges. •Adoption Preparation for Long-Term Residents: The program will prepare several long-term residents for adoption, providing them with foundational training to enhance their transition into new homes. •Transition Training: Post-adoption, new owners of these dogs will participate in tailored training sessions to help establish trust, communication, and a lasting relationship. •Adoptable Dogs with Training: Dogs who have been with the rescue for at least six months will be available for adoption, with post-adoption training provided for both the dog and their new owner to ensure a successful transition and lasting bond. “Every dog has the potential to be a well-mannered, cherished companion, and we’re thrilled to bring our experience to this collaboration,” said Tyler Ohlmann, Owner of Rosie Dane Dog Training. “This program is a game-changer for both the dogs and their families.” Building Bridges for Long-Term Success Barktown Rescue’s mission goes beyond finding homes for dogs—it’s about creating successful, lasting relationships. By investing in training and support, this program addresses one of the key factors in reducing return rates, ensuring that more dogs remain in their loving homes for life. The training course will begin on January 19, with weekly sessions conducted by Barktown volunteers and overseen by Rosie Dane Dog Training. Eligible dogs and their adoptive families will receive this service free or at a reduced cost, further eliminating barriers to successful adoptions. PEDIGREE Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working to help end pet homelessness. Nearly 3.1 million dogs end up in shelters and rescues every year, and nearly half never find a home. The foundation was established in 2008 by Mars Petcare, maker of PEDIGREE® food for dogs, to help increase dog adoption rates. We've awarded more than 6,300 grants and over $14 million to U.S. shelters and rescues that help dogs in need. Since launching our Canadian grant program in 2022, we have provided $345k CAD to local shelters and rescues in need across Canada, as well as $20k CAD in Disaster Relief. At PEDIGREE Foundation, we're working toward a day when all dogs are safe, secure, cared for, fed well and loved. See how you can help at PedigreeFoundation.org.
